With the celebration of 50 years of Star Trek in full swing, and with a few new followers here on my blog, I’m curious to know, how many of you are fellow Trekkies?<\/p>\n

If you’ve read any of my books, you might have figured out that I’m a total Trekkie. But just in case you missed some of the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle references, here’s a recap:<\/p>\n

\"data\"<\/a>In Dreamthief, Olive’s boyfriend is named Brent. In an earlier draft, I had Olive explain that she’d liked Brent Spiner, the actor, as a teenager, and so that was one of the reasons she’d liked her current love interest. Brent, the boyfriend, even looked like the actor. If you’re not as geeky as I am, Brent Spiner played Data. In reality, he was one of my fave characters. Who are your favorite Star Trek characters?<\/p>\n

Also in Dreamthief, Olive is half-elven, half-human. Again, in an earlier draft, Olive remarked on how unique\u00a0she is because she’s the daughter of an elf and a human. That hardly happens ever, right? I mean, sure, there’s Spock, Tanis Half-Elven from Dragonlance, Shea Ohmsford of Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara, even Voldemort. (Okay, maybe she’s not as unique as she thinks.)<\/p>\n

In Spellweaver, Olive remarks that, “She’s a doctor, not a chef.” And then continues by saying that she purposely uses Star Trek references around the Wults because they don’t get it. FYI, Wults are the ancestors of Vikings living in Faythander, so no Star Trek. No TVs, actually.<\/p>\n
