Life throws curve balls all the time, doesn’t it? This week, I’d planned to volunteer in the school library, cart kids from ballet practice to football, make a quick run out to our church’s temple in Oklahoma City. I’m also making time to write–I plan to finish my fourth novel by the end of October. <\/p>\n

Today the school nurse called. My son has the stomach flu. Flexibility–another virtue moms appreciate.<\/p>\n

I mentioned my novel. Because I’m an unpublished author, it’s hard for me to say, “Hi, I’m an author, and here’s what I write,” simply because I don’t have anything out there for you to read. But that’s why I’ve got this blog, because every now and then, I get to give you a sneak peek of what I’m working on.<\/p>\n

This novel is about Olive Kennedy–a psychologist for people who’ve visited Fairy World and have no memory of it. She’s trying to save her godson from an evil being called the Dreamthief. In this scene, she’s bantering with a smug, yet handsome,Viking descendant named Kull. He’s never been to our world before, and he makes some interesting discoveries . . .<\/p>\n

\nA knock came at my door. I jumped.<\/div>\n
\nI crossed through my living room toward the door. Who could it be at such an unholy hour? I looked out the peep hole. <\/div>\n
\nKull.<\/div>\n
\nWhat on earth did he want?<\/div>\n
\nI cracked the door open.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/div>\n
\nHe had a look of amazement on his face as he held up a can of Dr. Pepper. \u201cHave you ever tasted such a thing?\u201d<\/div>\n
\nI rolled my eyes. \u201cYou\u2019ve come here in the middle of night for this?\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s very good. Even in the Wultlands nothing is served as strong as this beverage. It has bubbles in it, Olive.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nI ground my teeth. He peeked inside. \u201cIs everything okay?\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cYou look pale.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cMay I come inside? You really should try this.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cCan it wait until\u2014\u201d<\/div>\n
\nHe pushed past me and entered my apartment. Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn.<\/i> \u201cI could call the police for this sort of thing, you know.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nHe ignored me and crossed to my kitchen. He pulled two glasses from the cabinets. My cat, Han Solo, appeared and brushed against the warrior\u2019s legs. I leaned on the bar. I wondered where on earth this guy got his nerve, though secretly I felt grateful not to be alone anymore.<\/div>\n
\nKull poured two glasses and handed me one. \u201cDrink it slowly. It\u2019s got a powerful fizz.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nI emptied half my cup. He lifted an eyebrow.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cSo what happened to staying at your hotel?\u201d I asked him.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cHave you been to one of those places? They\u2019ll bore you to tears. Nothing to do but watch that box. No sport, no libraries. I thought I would succumb to madness. And then I found a machine with this.\u201d He held up his glass. \u201cAmazing, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cSure,\u201d I said and took another sip.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cDid I wake you?\u201d he asked.<\/div>\n
\nI glanced at my bathroom. The light was still on. \u201cNo, not exactly.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cYou\u2019re frightened of something. What is it?\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cI never said I was frightened of anything.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nHe leaned over the bar, close enough for me to see the soft azure flecks in his eyes. \u201cYou didn\u2019t have to say it.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nI wanted to draw back, but his gaze held me. \u201cIn the mirror,\u201d I admitted quietly. \u201cIt was the Dreamthief, at least I suspect so.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cDid it harm you?\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cNo, I don\u2019t think it has the power to.\u201d Not yet, anyway.<\/o:p><\/i><\/div>\n
