<\/a>My emotions are always a mess on release day. I feel one part elated and the other part nervous as heck. Personally, I just hope\u00a0people read it!<\/p>\n

For today’s post, I considered\u00a0several topics, but there is one scene in the book that I felt really took my writing up a notch. It was the hardest scene in the book to write. In the first draft, I breezed through it and thought it was okay, but when I went back to revise, I realized it needed more depth. I really get into the characters’ inner struggles and personal inadequacies. I talk about their feelings, (gasp!) \u00a0and I knew this scene needed to be better.<\/p>\n

Usually, one scene takes me about half an hour to edit. This scene took three days of non-stop re-writing. At one point, I seriously hated it, but in the end, I felt pretty darn proud of what I accomplished.<\/p>\n

I haven’t shared this scene with anyone. It hasn’t gone out to any bloggers or book blitzers. I selfishly kept it to myself so I could share it with all of you.<\/p>\n

A note of caution, this scene contains a few mild spoilers, but there is nothing major given away.<\/p>\n

From Silverwitch, Chapter Seventeen<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I found the end of the hallway and took the wooden ladder leading up, then climbed onto a platform. Several people milled about as I walked through the narrow corridors, but most didn\u2019t pay me any attention. When I reached the western end of the complex, I found a room with a wooden door and let myself inside. Kull and Heidel both sat on the floor with their hands tied and gags in their mouths. Blood dripped down the side of Kull\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

Perfectly fine? Maveryck will so be getting a piece of my mind\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

I cursed under my breath and untied Heidel, removed her gag, and then moved to Kull and did the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid Jahr\u2019ad do this to you?\u201d I asked Kull.<\/p>\n

He worked his jaw back and forth before speaking. \u201cNo. One of his men. I happened to mention that I thought keeping dragons in captivity was illegal, and then he struck me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I inspected his wound, but with the blood drying on his forehead and cheek, it was hard to tell how deep it went.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis needs to be cleaned,\u201d I said, moving his hair away from his face, \u201cand possibly stitched. What did he hit you with?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA club of some sort. Made of bone. Possibly dragon bone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heat simmered inside my chest. \u201cDragon bone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I think they\u2019re breeding dragons here, most likely for the purposes of illegally fighting them against one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s horrible. And highly illegal. No wonder Maveryck didn\u2019t want me telling them about my relation to my stepfather.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel paced the room behind us. \u201cWhat do we do now? Do we continue with this charade and continue to follow Maveryck? Or do we try to escape?\u201d<\/p>\n

The room was silent for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we escaped,\u201d Kull said, \u201cwe\u2019d have no guide to get us back to the rails, and since they blindfolded us, I would have no idea how to get back. Even if I could, navigating through the desert with those sandstorms would be suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we still wouldn\u2019t know how to free my stepfather,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I believe we should stay here,\u201d Kull said, \u201cat least until we get what we came for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel sighed. \u201cSo we just stay here and trust Jahr\u2019ad\u2019s men won\u2019t kill us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey won\u2019t kill us,\u201d Kull said flatly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrust me. I won\u2019t let it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOverconfident, as usual,\u201d Heidel said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not overconfident,\u201d Kull said. \u201cI\u2019m honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel narrowed her eyes. \u201cBrother, forgive me if I don\u2019t trust you to miraculously get us out of here safely. You don\u2019t understand men like Jahr\u2019ad the way I do. He can\u2019t be trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI agree that Jahr\u2019ad can\u2019t be trusted,\u201d Kull said, \u201cbut there is still a chance that he can be reasoned with. Not every man is as evil as Geth. You\u2019d do well to remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s right,\u201d I said. \u201cWhile Jahr\u2019ad may not be trustworthy, it doesn\u2019t make him like Geth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel fisted her hands. \u201cYou only say that because you share my brother\u2019s bed. You\u2019d say anything to agree with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s uncalled for,\u201d Kull said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s technically untrue,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is it untrue?\u201d she asked. \u201cYou\u2019ve not shared his bed?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUh, well\u2026\u201d I wasn\u2019t sure how to dig myself out of this one. \u201cTechnically, no.\u201d<\/p>\n

She rounded on Kull. \u201cBrother, is this true?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it is true or not is none of your business, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is<\/em> my business,\u201d Heidel said. \u201cWhat is the matter with you? Are you damaged? How many women have you taken to bed before her? And now you will not take the woman you\u2019ve pledged your heart to? How long do you think she will put up with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow I choose to spend my private life is my own business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel glanced at me. \u201cAren\u2019t you concerned at all?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it wasn\u2019t really his decision completely.\u201d I could feel my cheeks heating up. I hated being put in this situation. \u201cI wasn\u2019t really\u2026 I mean\u2026 what I mean to say is\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was you who made this decision?\u201d Heidel asked me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has nothing to do with her,\u201d Kull interjected. \u201cIf you must know, after Father\u2019s death I realized I wanted to change my ways, to go back to traditional values and all that. It has nothing to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at Kull, silently thanking him for saving me from a catastrophically embarrassing situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe you,\u201d she said to Kull.<\/p>\n

\u201cBelieve what you want, but you\u2019ve no reason to pry into my life, and you certainly have no right to pry into Olive\u2019s personal life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have every right. It\u2019s not fair for you to judge every man who shows the slightest interest in me if I don\u2019t also have the same right to judge who you spend your time with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s completely different. I\u2019ve never courted a maniac bent on the destruction of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel laughed. \u201cAnd I suppose Princess Euralysia doesn\u2019t count? The queen who is now trying to conjure Theht, which will most likely end in the destruction of Faythander? Oh, and that\u2019s right, you are now courting Olive, aren\u2019t you?\u201d She thrust her finger at me. \u201cThe woman destined to destroy our world. I\u2019ve heard the rumors, Kull\u2014about the Deathbringer prophecies. Don\u2019t pretend you don\u2019t know what I\u2019m talking about. Do you even know who she really is?\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart hit the bottom of my chest. Heidel had no idea how badly her words hurt me.<\/p>\n

Kull rose to his full height. \u201cThat\u2019s enough,\u201d he snapped. \u201cYou are never to speak to Olive in such a way ever again. Is that clear? And just so you understand, I will never listen to your advice when it comes to relationships. You are the last person on this planet I would seek advice from. You gave your heart to a man so evil he destroyed magic, and then nearly succeeded in destroying our world. How I choose to spend my time is not your concern, and you are never to bring it up again. Is that clear?\u201d<\/p>\n

Heidel pursed her lips. Her hands trembled as she kept them fisted. \u201cPerfectly clear,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cAnd now I see that when you told me you forgave me for my past crimes, you were lying. I don\u2019t know why I\u2019m surprised.\u201d She choked on her words and hastily brushed away a tear running down her cheeks. \u201cYes, I understand completely.\u201d Turning, she stormed out of the room, not bothering to slam the door behind her.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
